Want to know how to make an arena-sized gig feel like an intimate party in a Haitian beach shack? Go and see Arcade Fire. Certainly they have made the effort. Earls Court's cavernous ceiling is decked out in fairy lights and disco balls, the sound desk is covered in Haitian palm trees, and fans arrive (on the band's orders) in fancy dress (Walter White was my favorite). Combined with the band's expansive lighting show, this is the type of spectacle normally reserved for Lady Gaga, but with the heart of a pub gig.
This should not really be happening. Bands with Constantly revolving retinues of musicians (up to 12 on stage tonight), playing mixtures of classic and oddball instruments (how Often have you seen a hurdy gurdy in an arena gig?) Do not normally grace this type of internship. Arcade Fire Have had no hit sings, and are here promoting a new album based on an eighteenth century Kierkegaard essay. Rock n'Roll indeed.
This does not bother the sold out crowd. The opening fifteen minutes is a blistering introduction to the band's back catalog, ending with frantic renditions 'Rebellion (Lies)' and 'Power Out'. The wild intensity of lead singer Win Butler's eyes is still arresting across the expanse of the arena's floor During the latter's anthemic chorus.
This being an expensive arena gig, there are several Spinal Tap moments dotted Throughout the evening. During 'We Exist' ('a dancey number if you like that kind of shit') drops to Within a lighting rig at few feet of the audience's outstretched arms. Simultaneously a group of dancers appear <br> Articles on a separate internship and awkwardly jiggle. It intensifies the party atmosphere, but Numerous appearances from Willy Wonka lookalike covered in mirrors Seems to baffle most of the audience.
A euphoric finale of early single 'Wake Up' Ensures the audience disassemble still chanting the song's iconic howl. Arena gigs are never perfect, but Arcade Fire have taken a good shot at and achieving and That feat. Let's hope other bands wake up to Their mantra.
